Insurance vs Service Plan: Key Differences
Boiler Insurance
Boiler insurance covers the cost of repairs when something goes wrong. It doesn't include preventative maintenance. Think of it like car insurance — pays out when there's a claim, doesn't do an MOT.
Boiler Service Plan
A service plan includes an annual boiler service (preventative maintenance) and may also include repair cover. It's proactive — designed to prevent breakdowns rather than just pay for them.
What We Recommend
For most homeowners: an annual service (from £70) is the most important thing. Add repair cover if your boiler is 7+ years old. A service plan that bundles both is often better value than buying separately.
What to Watch For
Many cheaper boiler cover policies have high excess fees (£50–£100 per call-out), age limits, or exclude certain types of faults. Read the small print carefully.
