Boiler vs Solar: Where to Spend Your Money?

Many homeowners face this choice: replace an aging inefficient boiler, or invest in solar panels. Let's look at the numbers.

Boiler Replacement

Cost: £1,200–£2,500. Annual savings: £150–£350 on gas bills. Payback period: 4–8 years. Also provides reliable heating and hot water for 10–15 years.

Solar Panels

Cost: £5,000–£9,000 for a typical 4kW system. Annual savings: £400–£700 (electricity reduction + export tariff). Payback period: 8–15 years.

The Verdict

If your boiler is struggling or over 10 years old, replace it first. A failing boiler in winter is an emergency — solar panels aren't. Once your heating is sorted, solar is an excellent next investment, especially if you can charge a battery or use an EV.
