Power Flushing — Do You Actually Need It?
A power flush clears sludge and debris from your heating system. It's often recommended (and sometimes required) when installing a new boiler. But it's not always necessary.
When a Power Flush IS Needed
- Cold spots on radiators (especially at the bottom)
- Brown or black water when bleeding radiators
- System that's rarely been serviced
- Old system with many radiators and long pipe runs
- Required by boiler manufacturer as a warranty condition on old systems
When It Might Not Be Needed
- Newer system (less than 5 years old) that's been well maintained
- Inhibitor has been regularly added and system is clean
- Clear water when bleeding radiators
Alternatives
A chemical flush (adding cleaning chemicals and running the system for a few weeks) is a cheaper alternative (£100–£200) for lightly contaminated systems.
