The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant that provides £7,500 toward the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump installation. The grant is applied by the installer — you pay the reduced amount. Here's how the process works.

Step 1: Check eligibility

The property must be in England or Wales. You must own and live in the property (landlords may also apply for some property types). The property must have a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations. The heating being replaced must have been the primary heat source.

Step 2: Get an EPC if needed

If your EPC is more than 10 years old, or if it recommends unfitted insulation, you'll need an updated EPC (and the insulation) before proceeding. We can advise on this.

Step 3: Choose an MCS-certified installer

The installer must hold MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification to install the heat pump and submit the BUS application. We are MCS certified for air source heat pump installations.

Step 4: Installer submits the application

We submit the BUS grant application on your behalf before installation begins. The grant is approved, and we receive the £7,500 directly — reducing your invoice by that amount.

Step 5: Installation and commissioning

The heat pump is installed and commissioned. We complete the final paperwork and any post-installation documentation required by Ofgem.
