Around 4 million UK homes aren't connected to the mains gas network. For many of these — particularly those with no convenient oil tank space — LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is an excellent heating option.
What is LPG?
LPG is a mix of propane and butane that is stored as a liquid in a tank (typically in your garden) and vaporises into gas as it's used. It burns very similarly to natural gas, so LPG boilers are essentially the same as standard gas boilers — fitted with different burner jets to suit the fuel.
LPG vs oil: key differences
- Running costs: LPG is generally slightly more expensive per unit than heating oil, but comparable over the year due to LPG boilers' slightly higher efficiency.
- Maintenance: LPG boilers require less maintenance than oil boilers — no annual oil filter change or nozzle replacement needed.
- Tank options: LPG tanks can be above or below ground, giving more flexibility on placement.
Tank options
You can own your LPG tank or rent it from a supplier. Renting is more common — the supplier retains responsibility for the tank and you simply pay for the gas you use. We can advise on reputable LPG suppliers in your area.
