LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is used by approximately 150,000 UK homes that don't have access to mains natural gas. LPG boilers are very similar to natural gas boilers — using the same brands and models, just with different jet sizes and gas settings.
LPG vs natural gas
LPG has a higher calorific value per unit than natural gas, which means smaller jets are used in LPG boilers. Most modern boilers can be converted between gas types by changing a conversion kit (jets and settings). This is a qualified engineer task — it's not a DIY job.
LPG storage
LPG must be stored in a tank on your property — either above ground or buried. Tanks are typically owned by the gas supplier and rented to you. Above-ground tanks hold 750–3,000+ litres. You'll need a minimum distance from buildings and boundaries.
LPG running costs
LPG typically costs slightly more per kWh than natural gas but significantly less than electricity. Prices fluctuate seasonally — buying in summer when demand is lower often saves money.
Which LPG boiler?
Most major brands (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi) offer LPG versions of their standard ranges. We recommend Worcester Bosch or Vaillant for LPG installations — their LPG reliability record is excellent.
CORGI/Gas Safe registration for LPG
Engineers working on LPG systems require a separate Gas Safe registration covering LPG work. All our engineers hold the relevant LPG qualifications.
