With energy prices still elevated, every percentage point of efficiency matters. Here are the steps that actually move the needle on your gas bill.
1. Drop your thermostat by 1°C
Each degree reduction saves approximately 8% on heating costs. On a £1,200 annual bill, that's £96/year — almost imperceptible in comfort terms but meaningful on the bill.
2. Use your programmer properly
Set heating to turn on 30 minutes before you need it, off 30 minutes before you leave. "Leaving it on low all day" costs more, not less. The heat-up period uses no more energy than maintaining temperature.
3. Service your boiler
An unserviced boiler can lose 5–10% efficiency from carbon deposits and scaled heat exchangers. A £79 annual service typically pays for itself in efficiency gains.
4. Bleed your radiators
Air-locked radiators don't heat fully but the boiler still runs. Bleeding all radiators at the start of winter ensures every radiator contributes fully.
5. Balance your radiators
If some radiators heat much faster than others, the system is unbalanced. A plumber or heating engineer can adjust lockshield valves to equalise flow — improving comfort and efficiency.
6. Insulate your loft if you haven't
Loft insulation (270mm) reduces heat loss by up to 25% through the ceiling. Often available free or subsidised under ECO4 for eligible households. Ask us about available grants.
