What Is a Smart Home Heating System?

Smart heating goes beyond a smart thermostat. Here's what a fully intelligent heating system looks like and what it costs.

A smart heating system integrates multiple technologies to automatically optimise comfort and energy use. Here's what's possible at different budget levels.

Level 1: Smart thermostat only (£150–£250 fitted)

Replace the existing programmer and room thermostat with a single smart unit (Nest, Hive, Tado). Whole-home control via app, geofencing, schedule learning. Savings: £75–£150/year.

Level 2: Smart thermostat + smart TRVs (£400–£800 fitted)

Add smart TRVs to individual radiators (Tado, Hive, Drayton Wiser). Each room gets its own schedule and temperature target. Unoccupied rooms automatically reduce. Savings: 15–25% on heating bills.

Level 3: Full zoned system (£800–£2,000+ fitted)

Multiple heating zones (upstairs/downstairs, or room-by-room) with dedicated zone valves and thermostats. Each zone controlled independently. Ideal for larger homes where different areas have very different usage patterns.

Level 4: Integrated smart home (£2,000+)

Integration with home automation systems (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Control4). Heating responds to other home sensors, presence detection, and external weather. Also integrates with solar PV systems to prioritise heating from self-generated electricity.
