A boiler breakdown is stressful — particularly in the middle of winter. Here's what to do in the first 30 minutes, and what to expect from our response.
Step 1: Check the basics (5 minutes)
- Check thermostat batteries — dead batteries are a surprisingly common cause
- Check boiler pressure gauge — if below 1 bar, re-pressurise before calling
- Check for a fault code on the boiler display — look it up online; many are simple resets
- Check other gas appliances work — if not, call National Gas Emergency 0800 111 999 immediately
Step 2: Attempt a reset (2 minutes)
If there's a fault code and pressure is correct: press and hold the reset button for 3 seconds. Allow 3 minutes for restart. If the boiler fires and stays on, monitor it for an hour. If it locks out again, call an engineer.
Step 3: Call us
If the basic checks and reset don't resolve it: call us. We offer same-day emergency response across Corby and the surrounding areas. We carry most common replacement parts (diverter valves, igniters, sensors, pumps) in our vans, meaning most repairs are completed on the first visit.
While you wait
Electric fan heaters for critical rooms. Hot water bottles and extra blankets overnight. If it's a combi and only heating has failed (hot water still works from the tap), you at least have warm water for washing.
If it's unrepairable
We'll advise honestly. If the boiler is beyond economic repair, we can quote for a replacement and in many cases start the installation within 24–48 hours.
