Overview
Both the Adey MagnaClean and Fernox TF1 are high-quality magnetic filters widely used by professional heating engineers. There is no bad choice between them.
Magnetic performance
Both use powerful rare-earth magnets. The MagnaClean Professional 2 and Fernox TF1 are closely matched. Independent tests show similar sludge capture rates. Effectively equal.
Cleaning ease
MagnaClean: the collector tube can be removed and rinsed in under 2 minutes. TF1: similar process but slightly more involved depending on the model. MagnaClean wins marginally on ease of servicing.
Flow restriction
Both are designed to minimise flow restriction. In practice, negligible difference.
Mesh pre-filter
Fernox TF1 includes a mesh filter in addition to the magnet, capturing non-magnetic debris. This is a genuine advantage over the basic MagnaClean. Fernox wins on comprehensive filtration.
Price
Both are similarly priced (typically £100–£120 supply only). Equal.
Worcester Bosch requirement
Worcester Bosch specifically recommend or require an Adey MagnaClean on their installations for warranty purposes — worth noting if fitting to a Worcester boiler.
Verdict
MagnaClean Pro 2 for Worcester Bosch installations (warranty requirement). Fernox TF1 for comprehensive filtration on any other brand. Both excellent.
