Overview
Both oil and LPG are popular choices for the 1.5 million UK homes not connected to the gas network. Each has distinct advantages.
Installation cost
Oil boiler: £1,700–£2,500. LPG boiler: £1,400–£2,000. LPG wins on installation (no OFTEC requirement, uses similar boilers to gas).
Running costs
Heating oil typically costs slightly less per kWh than LPG, though both fluctuate significantly. Oil is usually marginally cheaper to run annually.
Maintenance
Oil boilers require annual servicing including nozzle and filter replacement. LPG boilers require similar servicing to gas boilers — slightly less intensive. LPG wins on maintenance.
Storage
Both require an on-site tank. Oil tanks are typically larger (above-ground plastic or steel). LPG tanks can be above or below ground, with more flexibility.
Future-proofing
Both fuels face phase-out pressure in new builds. LPG may have a longer life in the existing property market as it's closer to the natural gas infrastructure.
Verdict
If you have an existing oil tank in good condition, stick with oil — it's usually cheaper to run. Starting fresh: LPG's lower installation cost and simpler maintenance give it a slight edge.
