How to Compare Boiler Quotes
Boiler quotes can look very different even for the same job. Here's how to compare them properly so you're choosing on value, not just price.
Getting multiple boiler quotes is good practice — but comparing them meaningfully requires knowing what should be included. A £999 quote and a £1,499 quote may be for exactly the same job once everything is accounted for.
What every quote should include
- Boiler brand and model (not just "combi boiler")
- Output in kW and ErP efficiency rating
- Flue — type and length included
- Magnetic filter (Adey MagnaClean or equivalent)
- Inhibitor dosing
- Controls — thermostat, programmer, or smart thermostat
- Commissioning and testing
- Gas Safe certificate
- Building Regulations notification and certificate
- Manufacturer warranty registration
- Removal and disposal of old boiler
- VAT (at 5% for residential boiler installation)
Red flags in quotes
Boiler-only price: "Supply and fit from £799" often means the boiler alone — filters, controls, flue, and certificates add hundreds more. Always ask for a fully itemised all-in quote.
Unspecified boiler brand: If the quote doesn't name the specific boiler, the installer may substitute a cheaper brand after acceptance.
No warranty term stated: Warranty length varies by brand and installer accreditation. If it's not specified, it may not be the extended warranty.
Comparing on value
Compare: total installed price (including everything), warranty length, brand reputation, and installer credentials. A £200 premium for a 12-year warranty boiler vs an 8-year warranty is worth paying over the boiler's lifetime.
