Smart Thermostats: Full Installation Guide
A smart thermostat can save £75–£150 per year on heating bills. Here's how they work, which ones are best, and what's involved in fitting one.
A smart thermostat learns your schedule, adjusts automatically when you're away, and lets you control heating from anywhere via app. Most pay for themselves within 18 months in energy savings.
How they save money
Traditional programmable timers heat your home whether you're there or not. Smart thermostats use:
- Geofencing — detects when your phone leaves home and automatically reduces heating
- Learning — adapts to your routine so heating is ready when you arrive
- Remote control — extend heating from the office, or turn it off if you forgot
- Weather compensation — adjusts heating based on outdoor temperature
The Energy Saving Trust estimates savings of £75–£150/year vs a standard programmable timer.
Which smart thermostat?
- Nest Learning Thermostat — auto-learning, excellent app. Best for tech-savvy users.
- Hive Active Heating — easy to use, good app, very popular in the UK
- Tado — strong geofencing, works well in multi-zone setups
- Worcester Bosch Wave — integrates natively with Worcester boilers for the best OpenTherm performance
- Vaillant vSmart/sensoCOMFORT — native Vaillant integration
What's involved in fitting one
Most smart thermostats are fitted by a Gas Safe engineer in under an hour. The old thermostat and programmer are removed and the new receiver unit wired in its place. Controls are configured on the app. We fit all major smart thermostat brands — see our smart thermostat installation service.
