Moving a boiler to a new location is perfectly possible in most cases, but it involves extending gas pipework, fitting a new flue, and re-routing water connections. Here's what's involved and what to expect to pay.
Why people move boilers
Common reasons include kitchen renovations (moving the boiler out of the kitchen to create more cupboard space), loft conversions (relocating a boiler from a soon-to-be-converted loft), or simply wanting a more convenient or aesthetically better location.
What's involved
- Gas pipework extension: A Gas Safe engineer must extend the gas supply pipe to the new location. This is the most regulated part of the job.
- New flue: The flue must terminate on an external wall within a reasonable distance. A new boiler position usually requires a new flue.
- Water pipework: Central heating flow/return pipes and cold water supply need extending to the new position.
- Condensate drain: The condensate pipe needs to reach a drain at the new location.
Typical costs
A short relocation (same room, different wall): £400–£600. Medium relocation (different room, same floor): £600–£900. Complex relocation (different floor, long pipe runs): £900–£1,500+.
Restrictions
Boilers cannot be installed in bathrooms or rooms used for sleeping. Flues must maintain minimum distances from windows, doors, and boundaries. Our engineers will assess the options during a free survey.
