A Guide to Heating Controls
Room Thermostat
Controls the overall temperature of your home. When the room reaches the target temperature, it signals the boiler to stop heating. Set to the lowest comfortable temperature — typically 18–21°C.
Programmer / Timer
Sets the times when your heating and hot water come on. A basic programmer allows two on/off periods per day. Modern programmers allow different schedules for each day of the week.
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)
Allow you to control the temperature in individual rooms. Turn down TRVs in rooms not in regular use — this is one of the most effective ways to save on heating bills. Always keep at least one radiator TRV fully open (usually the hallway) to give the boiler somewhere to send heat.
Smart Thermostats
Hive, Nest, and Tado learning thermostats go beyond simple timers. They learn your schedule, use weather data to adjust heating, and can be controlled remotely. Average saving: £100–£200/year.
