Underfloor Heating and Gas Boilers
Wet underfloor heating (UFH) can be run from any modern gas boiler. However, the boiler needs to be able to modulate down to lower flow temperatures (typically 35–45°C) for maximum efficiency — most modern condensing boilers can do this.
The Benefits
- Highly efficient — low flow temperatures mean the boiler condenses more
- Even heat distribution across the floor area
- No visible radiators — more design freedom
- Works well with thermostatic zone controls
Practical Considerations
UFH responds slowly compared to radiators — it takes 30–60 minutes to warm up. It's best used in conjunction with a smart thermostat that can learn and anticipate your schedule.
Cost
Adding UFH to a renovation costs £500–£3,000 per room depending on the system type and floor area. It's most cost-effective when floors are already being replaced.
