Back Boilers — What Are They and Should You Replace?
A back boiler is a boiler fitted behind a gas fire or fireplace. They were common in UK homes built between the 1960s and 1990s but are no longer manufactured.
Why Back Boilers Are Becoming Obsolete
- Maximum 78% efficiency (non-condensing) vs 94% for modern boilers
- Spare parts increasingly hard to source
- Repair costs are rising as fewer engineers work on them
- They take up chimney space and limit design options
When to Replace
If your back boiler is over 15 years old, not being serviced regularly, or requiring repairs — replace it. The energy savings alone typically pay for a new combi boiler within 4–7 years.
Replacement Options
Most back boilers are replaced with a combi boiler installed elsewhere in the home (utility room, kitchen, or airing cupboard). The original fireplace can be retained, removed, or converted to a decorative feature or gas fire.
