How to Reduce Hot Water Usage and Save Money
Hot water heating accounts for a significant share of your gas bill. Here are practical ways to reduce consumption without sacrificing comfort.
For a typical UK household, hot water heating accounts for approximately 15–20% of the annual energy bill. Here's how to reduce that meaningfully without a cold shower.
1. Reduce shower time
The average UK shower uses approximately 8–12 litres per minute of hot water. Cutting a 10-minute shower to 7 minutes saves approximately 24–36 litres per shower. For a family of four showering daily, that's approximately 35,000–52,000 litres/year — a meaningful gas saving.
2. Install a low-flow shower head
A low-flow (eco) shower head reduces flow rate from 10–12 L/min to 6–8 L/min while maintaining perceived water pressure. Cost: £20–£50. Annual saving: £30–£75 depending on household size.
3. Turn down the cylinder temperature
If you have a hot water cylinder, check the thermostat. It should be set to 60°C — hot enough to kill Legionella, but no hotter. Many cylinders are set higher. Each 10°C reduction saves approximately 5% on water heating costs.
4. Fix dripping hot taps
A tap that drips hot water wastes a surprising amount of energy. A drip rate of one drop per second wastes approximately 30 litres/day — and all of it goes via the boiler. A £15 tap washer repair pays for itself in weeks.
5. Use the dishwasher efficiently
Run full loads only. Use the eco setting where possible. Modern dishwashers heat their own water — they're typically more efficient than hand washing with a running hot tap.
6. Consider a boiler timer for the cylinder
If you have a system or heat-only boiler, programme the cylinder to heat at off-peak times (if you have a time-of-use tariff) and only when needed — not 24 hours a day.
