How to Understand Your Boiler Warranty
Boiler warranties range from 2 to 12 years — but the small print matters. Here's how to understand what's actually covered and what isn't.
A boiler warranty is only as valuable as your understanding of its terms. Here's what to look for in the warranty documentation and how to ensure you're actually protected.
What's typically covered
Parts and labour for manufacturing defects and component failures during the warranty period. This includes heat exchanger failure, PCB (control board) failures, gas valve failure, fan failure, and pump failure — all common boiler faults that can cost £200–£600 to repair out of warranty.
What's typically NOT covered
- Damage from sludge/scale: If a magnetic filter wasn't fitted and inhibitor isn't maintained, sludge damage is usually excluded
- Damage from incorrect installation: If the boiler wasn't correctly commissioned
- Damage from failure to service: If annual servicing wasn't carried out by a Gas Safe engineer
- Consumable parts: Filters, anodes, electrodes
- Consequential loss: Costs arising from boiler failure (e.g., alternative heating during repair)
How to maintain your warranty
- Register the warranty immediately after installation (usually done by the installer)
- Have the boiler serviced annually by a Gas Safe engineer — keep service records
- Ensure a magnetic filter is fitted and maintained
- Maintain inhibitor levels (checked at annual service)
