Understanding Your Annual Boiler Service
What actually happens during a boiler service? What does the engineer check? And why does it matter for your warranty?
An annual boiler service is one of the most valuable things you can do for your central heating. Here's exactly what it involves and why skipping it is false economy.
What a service involves
A Gas Safe registered engineer will typically:
- Visually inspect the boiler and flue for signs of corrosion, damage, or leaks
- Check the gas pressure and flow rate at the boiler
- Inspect and clean the burner assembly
- Check the heat exchanger for signs of cracking or fouling
- Test all safety devices including the overheat thermostat and pressure relief valve
- Check and clean the condensate trap
- Test combustion analysis (flue gas readings) to verify efficient and safe combustion
- Check the magnetic filter (if fitted) and clean if needed
- Test operation of all controls
- Issue a service record
How long does it take?
Typically 45 minutes to an hour for a straightforward annual service. Longer if work is needed.
What it costs
Our annual service is £79. That's roughly 22p per day — less than a cup of tea.
Warranty implications
Most manufacturers require annual servicing to keep the warranty valid. A single warranty claim on a non-serviced boiler can be rejected — costing hundreds of pounds.
