What is a Power Flush and Do You Need One?
Power flushing removes years of sludge, rust, and scale from your central heating system. Here's when you need it and what it costs.
Over time, central heating systems accumulate iron oxide sludge (rust particles), limescale, and debris. This reduces efficiency, causes cold radiators, and can eventually destroy heat exchangers. A power flush removes all of it.
What is a power flush?
A power flush machine connects to your central heating system and pumps a chemical cleaner through all the radiators, pipework, and the boiler at high velocity. The machine separates and captures the debris, leaving the system clean and flowing freely.
Signs you need a power flush
- Radiators cold at the bottom (sludge settling out)
- Boiler making banging or kettling noises
- Slow heating — system takes a long time to warm up
- Black water when radiators are bled
- New boiler being fitted to an existing system
Do I need one with a new boiler?
If your existing system is old and hasn't been flushed before, most manufacturers require (or strongly recommend) a power flush before installing a new boiler. Fitting a new boiler to a contaminated system will void the warranty and damage the new heat exchanger.
How much does it cost?
Typically £250–£450 depending on the number of radiators and degree of contamination. We quote based on an inspection. When fitting a new boiler, we can often combine the power flush and installation for a combined package price.
How long does it take?
Half a day to a full day depending on the system size. We complete it in a single visit.
