Boilers in Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas
Listed buildings and conservation areas have additional restrictions that can affect boiler installation. Here's what to consider.
Flue Restrictions
Flue positions on the external face of listed buildings may require Listed Building Consent. Flues in conservation areas may also have restrictions — especially on front elevations.
What Usually Requires Consent
- External flue terminals on a listed building (any grade)
- Flues visible from the street in conservation areas
- Any structural alterations to accommodate a new boiler position
What Usually Doesn't
- Like-for-like boiler replacement in the same position
- Internal work only with no external flue changes
Our Advice
Contact your local planning authority before booking an installation if you're unsure. We're experienced in working with listed buildings and can advise on flue positions that minimise impact on the building's character.
