Most boiler replacements are like-for-like — same location, new boiler. But sometimes homeowners want to move the boiler to a more convenient position. Here's what's involved.
Why move a boiler?
- Converting the kitchen and wanting to reclaim a corner
- Moving the boiler upstairs when converting a ground floor room
- Relocating from an old airing cupboard to a new utility room
- Moving to the loft as part of a full home renovation
What's involved in relocation
Moving a boiler requires: extending or rerouting gas pipework, rerouting the flue, extending the system pipework (flow and return), possibly extending condensate drainage, and re-commissioning in the new location. This is significantly more work than a like-for-like swap.
Typical additional cost
Boiler move: additional £300–£800 on top of standard installation cost, depending on distance and complexity. Loft installation adds more (access, safety platform, frost protection for condensate).
When it's not worth it
For minor convenience improvements (a few feet sideways), the cost rarely justifies the benefit. For major renovations or when the current location is genuinely impractical, relocation makes sense.
Important: building control notification
Moving a boiler's flue position requires Building Regulations notification. We handle this as part of any relocation installation.
