How Does a Combi Boiler Work?
Combi boilers connect directly to the mains water supply. When you open a hot tap or run a shower, the boiler fires up and heats cold water on demand, delivering it at mains pressure. When the heating is called for, the same boiler heats water and circulates it through your radiator system. The clever switching between these two modes happens automatically within the boiler itself.
Modern combi boilers are condensing boilers, meaning they recapture heat from flue gases that older boilers simply wasted. This makes them significantly more energy-efficient — some models achieve over 94% efficiency ratings.
