How Does a System Boiler Work?

The system boiler takes its cold water supply directly from the mains and heats it, storing the hot water in a sealed (unvented) cylinder. When you turn on a tap, hot water is delivered at mains pressure from the cylinder. The heating circuit is separate and runs directly from the boiler to your radiators.

Like a combi boiler, it draws cold water directly from the mains — but rather than heating water on demand, it stores hot water in a separate unvented cylinder, ready for immediate use.

How Does a System Boiler Work?

The system boiler contains most of the key components — pump, expansion vessel, and pressure relief valve — built into the unit itself. It heats water from the mains supply and sends it to an insulated, sealed (unvented) hot water cylinder. When a tap or shower is opened, hot water is delivered at full mains pressure from the cylinder. Meanwhile, the central heating circuit operates independently, distributing heat to radiators around the home.

Because no cold water tank is needed in the loft, system boilers are a popular upgrade from old gravity-fed (heat-only) setups. The loft is freed up, and you gain the benefit of mains-pressure hot water.

System Boiler vs Combi Boiler

The key advantage of a system boiler over a combi is its ability to supply hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously without any drop in pressure or flow rate. If you have a household where two showers might run at the same time — or where baths, showers, and kitchen taps all compete for hot water — a system boiler with a suitably sized cylinder is usually the right answer.

The trade-off is that you need physical space for the cylinder, and if the cylinder runs out of hot water during a period of very high demand, you'll need to wait for it to reheat.
