Biomass and Renewable Heating FAQs

Biomass boilers, solar thermal, and renewable heating FAQs for UK homes.

5 questions answered by our Gas Safe engineers
What is a biomass boiler?
A biomass boiler burns organic materials (wood pellets, logs, or chips) to produce heat. It's a low-carbon alternative to gas and oil heating.
Are biomass boilers expensive to run?
Wood fuel is typically cheaper than gas per kWh, but costs vary by fuel type and supplier. Biomass boilers require more maintenance than gas boilers and need fuel storage space.
Can I get a grant for a biomass boiler?
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has closed. Currently, the main grant for renewable heating is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for heat pumps.
What is solar thermal heating?
Solar thermal systems use sunlight to heat water in a collector panel on your roof. The heated water is stored in a cylinder and supplements your boiler. It can provide 50–70% of hot water needs in summer.
Do renewable systems work with a gas boiler?
Yes — solar thermal and air source heat pumps can work alongside a gas boiler as a hybrid system, reducing gas consumption and bills.
