Boiler Maintenance and Care FAQs

How to look after your boiler, extend its life, and avoid common problems.

5 questions answered by our Gas Safe engineers
How do I maintain my boiler between services?
Keep the area around the boiler clear, check the pressure monthly, bleed radiators at the start of winter, and don't ignore warning lights or unusual noises.
Should I turn my boiler off in summer?
You can, but we recommend running the boiler for 15 minutes every few weeks in summer. This prevents the pump from seizing — a common summer problem.
How do I bleed a radiator?
Turn off the heating and wait for it to cool. Use a radiator key to slowly open the bleed valve (don't remove it fully). Hold a cloth below — air will hiss out, followed by water. Close the valve when water appears, check boiler pressure, and repressurise if needed.
What is magnetic filtration and do I need it?
A magnetic filter catches metallic sludge before it reaches the boiler. It's required by most manufacturers as a warranty condition and dramatically extends boiler lifespan. All our installations include one.
Can I lag my pipes to prevent freezing?
Yes — lagging (insulating) condensate pipes is recommended if they run outside or through an unheated space. Frozen condensate pipes are the most common cause of boiler faults in winter.
