How to Check Your Boiler Is Gas Safe Registered

Before any engineer works on your gas boiler, verify they're Gas Safe registered. Here's how to check in under two minutes.

Hiring an unregistered engineer to work on your gas appliances is illegal and dangerous. Here's how to verify any engineer before they start work.

Step 1: Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card

Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries a photo ID card. Ask to see it before work begins. The card shows:

  • The engineer's name and photo
  • Their licence number
  • The type of gas work they're qualified to do (check "domestic natural gas" is listed)
  • The expiry date

Step 2: Verify online

Go to gassaferegister.co.uk and enter the licence number. The site confirms the engineer is currently registered and lists their qualifications. This takes under 60 seconds.

Step 3: Check qualifications match the work

The Gas Safe register lists the specific work each engineer is qualified for. "CENWAT" means they can work on central heating and domestic hot water. Confirm the relevant category applies to your job.

Step 4: Call if unsure

You can also call the Gas Safe helpline on 0800 408 5500 to verify any engineer.

Never accept work from an unverified engineer

Using an unregistered engineer: is illegal, invalidates your home insurance, may void your boiler warranty, and puts your family at risk of carbon monoxide exposure. If someone quotes you significantly cheaper than anyone else and doesn't readily show their Gas Safe ID, walk away.
