How to Report an Unsafe Gas Appliance

If you suspect a gas appliance is unsafe — in your own home or a neighbour's — here's exactly what to do and who to call.

Gas appliance safety is everyone's responsibility. If you have any concerns about a gas appliance — whether yours or someone else's — here's how to act.

If you smell gas

  1. Do not switch any lights or electrical switches on or off
  2. Open windows and doors immediately
  3. Do not use a mobile phone inside the property
  4. Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service from outside: 0800 111 999 (free, 24/7)
  5. They will attend, locate the leak, and make safe

If you suspect a boiler or appliance is unsafe (but there's no immediate gas smell)

Call a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect the appliance. If the engineer identifies an unsafe situation, they are legally required to take action — typically issuing a "Immediately Dangerous" or "At Risk" notice and either making the appliance safe or disconnecting it.

Reporting a suspected unregistered gas engineer

If you believe a gas engineer has carried out work without being Gas Safe registered, report it to the Gas Safe Register: 0800 408 5500 or via gassaferegister.co.uk. This is taken seriously — operating as a gas engineer without registration is a criminal offence.

Reporting an unsafe rental property

If you're a tenant and believe your landlord's gas appliances haven't been inspected (no CP12 certificate), contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or your local authority housing department. Landlords have a legal obligation to provide annual gas safety certificates.

Carbon monoxide concerns

If your CO alarm has activated or you're concerned about CO exposure symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), leave immediately and call 999.
