An electric boiler heats water using electricity rather than burning a fossil fuel. They look similar to gas combi or system boilers and work with the same types of radiators and underfloor heating systems — the key difference is the heat source. Instead of a gas burner, the boiler contains one or more electric heating elements.
Efficiency and Running Costs
Electric boilers are considered 100% efficient at point of use — every unit of electricity drawn converts entirely into heat with no flue losses. However, electricity in the UK typically costs around three to four times more per kWh than mains gas. This means that despite the higher efficiency rating, electric boilers are more expensive to run than gas boilers for most households.
The equation changes if you have solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generating free electricity during the day, or if you can take advantage of an Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariff with cheaper overnight rates. In these cases, an electric boiler can become a genuinely cost-effective solution.
