A floor-standing boiler — also known as a freestanding boiler — is a boiler designed to be positioned on the floor rather than mounted on a wall. While the vast majority of modern UK residential boilers are compact wall-hung units, floor-standing models fill an important niche for larger properties, older buildings, and situations where a wall-mounted installation is not feasible.
When Is a Floor-Standing Boiler the Right Choice?
Floor-standing boilers are most commonly specified in the following situations:
- High heat demand properties — large detached homes, farmhouses, or properties with extensive radiator systems often need heat outputs beyond the range of standard wall-mounted combi or system boilers. Floor-standing boilers are available in outputs from around 30kW up to 70kW or more.
- Structural limitations — some older properties, outbuildings, or converted buildings have walls that are not suitable for safely supporting a heavy wall-mounted boiler.
- Oil or solid fuel replacements — many older floor-standing oil boilers and range cookers are replaced on a like-for-like footprint basis with a modern floor-standing condensing gas or oil model.
Modern Condensing Floor-Standing Boilers
Just like wall-mounted boilers, modern floor-standing boilers are condensing units that achieve efficiencies of up to 94%. They are available in gas, oil, and LPG versions, and can be configured as heat-only or system boilers. Some models include an integrated thermal store or indirect hot water cylinder within the same casing.
